September 23 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
September Speaker Kevin Donovan
Kevin Donovan is the Toronto Star’s Chief Investigative Reporter and the author of four books, including the Billionaire Murders, the Mysterious Deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman. Over a career that has spanned 35 years (so far!) Kevin has investigated murder and mayem, governments, public agencies, charities, lawyers, doctors, business people and police. His goal in all of his reporting is to make a difference. “It’s the people who place their trust in journalists like me who are the real heroes,” Kevin says. Awards for journalism include two Governor General’s Awards for Public Service Journalism, and three National Newspaper Awards. On overseas assignment, Kevin covered the Gulf War in 1991 and the conflict in Afghanistan immediately after 911. Kevin estimates he has been shot at by a half dozen nationalities, including the US marines. So far, he has not been hit. His other books include Secret Life, the Jian Ghomeshi Investigation; the Dead Times (fiction); and Crime Story (co-author Nick Pron). Kevin lives with his wife and family in Toronto.
Making a difference one story at a time will be the theme of Kevin’s talk to the Pickering Probus club, with an emphasis on his journalism in the Toronto Star related to the murders of Barry and Honey Sherman, and his National bestseller, the Billionaire Murders.
Kevin will share his inside information on the surprises and challenges investigating a crime that transfixed the nation. From his “gumshoe” efforts to get people to talk to his arguments in court to obtain police information, Kevin will give the audience a front row seat on the case. Barry and Honey Sherman, billionaires and philanthropists, touched thousands of people in their lives and their deaths – found staged in a macabre seen beside their underground swimming pool – led to wild speculation on “whodunnit.” Kevin will put to rest some theories and discuss others in this still unsolved crime.
Kevin has copies of his various books available at a flat rate of $20. If interested, let the club know and they will arrange to get you a copy.
